I find it very exciting that Burlesque is bouncing off the stage and onto the silver screen as well as hitting the printing press!

Historically this is not new news, as Gypsy Rose Lee’s book “The G String Murders” was adapted to the screen in “Lady of Burlesque” starring Barbara Stanwyck and was nominated for an Oscar back in 1944. But currently there are several documentaries being made about the History of Burlesque as a well as the modern continuation of the art form.

What I am enjoying about all these films and books is that each one has a voice unique to the performer or the region where they come from. Burlesque is more diverse today than it has ever been and the beauty of that is there is something for every one to enjoy.

There is no right way it should be done. That is an opinion (and believe me I have opinions, but that is another blog…) Art is Art, it is beyond opinion. You can take it or leave it, what matters is that you find the Art that appeals to you and that you support it!

But I digress; all these documentaries that are coming out collectively create a wonderful overview of the International Burlesque Explosion! I hope for more documentaries on the historical aspect of Burlesque, as so many of the Ladies and Gentlemen who have been a part of the legacy of Burlesque are still alive and we have a golden opportunity to hear their stories before they move on to the great stage in the sky.

Not all the films coming out are documentaries, some Feature Films feature the Stars of our community, like … Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, Immodesty Blaize, Waxie Moon, Scotty The Blue Bunny, Miss Indigo Blue, Lily Verlaine and so on… while others have Film Industry Stars Burlesquing us… ; )

Last year Waxie Moon was attending one of my Moomin Fort parties and he was so smitten with Moonin Fort that he wanted to do an Artist Residence in it.  An e-mail was sent out about it and nothing really came of it, until this year.  Earlier this Spring Honeysuckle Hype needed a place to workshop her new piece “ Eat Your Heart Out! “ and I offered up my living room. I figured if we could rehearse the dancing sequences for “House of Thee UnHoly”, and if Joey Arias, Justin Bond and John Kelly could rehearse their shows in my living room, why not have an on going Artist in Residence!

It was lovely to come home and see Ms. Hype in various states of undress and have conversations with her about where she was at in her creative process and kibbitz about the editing process of her piece, and giving a little feed back here and there (when asked for). Her show has legs and was quite well received on Kickstarter where she was fully funded. She has gone on to perform it is several cities and I feel like an Art parent.

The third Artist in Residence is Scotty The Blue Bunny who is my first live in resident, he has been here since May 28th and is working on his show that debuts in my new “Thee Wild Herring Cabaret “ series at West Hall July 10th. As you can imagine home life has been …. very amplified. The Rabbit plays the violin beautifully and is quite chatty in the morning which I am not…  But that is domestic stuff that no one wants to hear about.

Who knows maybe this year Waxie Moon will fulfill his residency in Moomin Fort with a beautiful dance.  I really enjoy having creative people in my home working on their creative process, it is satisfying and rewarding, and gives a whole new dimension to the house and what a house can be.

I Love this video that Honeysuckle Hype made during her residency.

The Swedish Housewife Presents the first annual Seafarer Follies! An aquatic cabaret to make Flo Ziegfeld fall off his boat. Just like in the olden days when “The Aqua Follies” rocked Greenlake, the Seafarer Follies! is the perfect Seafair antidote to loud boats, loud planes and suburban parades.

With acts by Moisture Festival favorites: Trixie Little and The Evil Hate “Sea”-Monkey (Baltimore) and debuting Bambi The Mermaid (Coney Island), Seattle all stars Waxie Moon as King Neptune, The Shanghai Pearl, The Swedish Housewife, and introducing Thee Bearded Clam Chorus!!! Of course, a Real Live Band will be rockin’ the boat!

Come dressed to the nine fathoms in your most outrageous nautical, aquatic, flyboy, flygirl, sailor, sea captain, mermaid, merman, or “you make it up” costume to win prizes and the prestigious year long title of  The Royal Sea Urchin!

That’s right, more flotsam and jetsam than you can shake a stick at… more crustaceans than you can put in a pot! You can’t throw a catfish on this stage and not hit a mermaid! Packed full of Sardines and Sailors!!! Blue Angels, Red Devils, and not your average Chicken of the Sea!

DOOR  at  6:00PM

SHOW at 8:00PM

What a stellar night it was last night. This little Fishing Village was hopping with activities to the point there were two other events I cold not fit in on my dance card.
I chose to spend my evening at The Moore watching the ethereally gorgeous talent of Anthony and The Johnsons with Johanna Constantine opening up the night with some lovely stark and bold Method A Go-Go. Johanna in her wild and demented avant guard burlesque gothic ways transformed from and angel, to a bird of prey, to a one of the 4 horses of the apocalypse, quite possibly an amalgam of all four.

My friend Jared and I drank in Anthony and shed a few tears as we listened to this amazing voice of pure emotion. At one point it stuck me that he is our Joni Mitchell. The musicality was tremendous and Anthony’s humor is gentle and intelligent.
He sang Beyonce’s “Crazy Love” and it was fabulous, but some ass in the audience had to yell out after this loving homage ” Fuck Beyonce!!!!” and Anthony very gently and firmly through existential conflict resolution retorted in a poetic fashion by speaking of gratitude appreciation and love. The ass finally got it 10 minutes later and apologized. I smiled a secret smile as I knew there would be more Beyonce in the night and that Jared would love it. We went as said our “Hello’s” after the show at a very odd after party in the dank and cave like crypt of a basement with the most absurd ramp ways for a lady in four inches heels and Jared hit his head on the ducting on our way out. Why not use the nice bar in the basement for an affair like that, and keep serving drinks why don’t ya?

We stumbled out the alley door and drove up to The Century Ballroom in hopes of catching Waxie Moon with Inga Ingenue and Lou Henry Hoover who were performing at The 12th Anniversary Gala and grande opening of The Tin Table.

Now I know there has been a lot of politics surrounding the purchase of this building and the tenants who have had to leave, but I have to say that the renovations are wonderful to see and in the interest of preserving architecture I have to support the change. The Odd Fellows Hall was a buzz with activity from the ground floor up. It was so exciting to see so mush diversity amongst the guests at the party. My daughter promptly found me and informed Jared and I that she had been groped by a dance partner and was trying to hide from this “ahem” gentleman. Be warned I toss a mean punch people and am not always a gentle lady. We went into the ballroom and My private joke was announced and out came Waxie Moon with Inga Ingenue ad Lou Henry Hoover doing Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” and proceeded to shred the scenery. People were screaming and simply besides themselves and how could they help themselves? With that combo of talent I’m surprised the audience kept their clothes on! I have been saying it all week and I am just more convinced than ever that Seattle is the place to be right now. It has the energy of NYC in the 80′s when it was still fun and not an overly jaded lifestyle boutique for the rich . Sorry New York but it is how I feel. I am grateful to be here. Johanna and I spoke a little about that after her show, she had to move to Philadelphia to get space to be the artist that she is, the artists are now starting to leave Brooklyn because they can’t afford to be there any longer but this is a whole other topic.

Tin Table food was yummy!

I am so excited for this show next week, and I sure hope you can make it as we stumble down memory lane at The Triple Door next week.

This was an interesting show to book as I cast a big net by sending out e-mails to most of the performers I have worked with over the last 21 years. There have been several incarnations of the show you will see next week, many of the acts I pursued were not available for this date as they are out touring around the planet, or had planned a much needed vacation, or had family emergencies and had to cancel, but I am most satisfied with how it all came together.

You will be the first audience to see El Vez’s work in progress “A Tribute To John Sex”.
He is in the midsts of developing a full length one man show about the Boylesque 80′s Icon John Sex, Sex was the first show I produced as The Swedish Housewife in 1987, at The Vogue on 1st Avenue.

Miss Astrid and I decided that the show should be run in chronological order and I think you will see that I have a pretty distinct esthetic that I am consistently attracted to. I see many parallels in my programing over the years and hope that the performers will see who there counter parts are, and that the newer ones will see how they are a continuum of those esthetics.

I must confess that when I book a show I am very selfish and book what thrills me. Granted I have a very diverse appetite.
I really appreciate that Dina Martina is willing to come all they way back to Seattle from her summer retreat in Provincetown to be part of this one night folly. It is rare that one gets to see her in a collective show these days, as we are so used to seeing her in her one woman extravaganzas that have literally been thrilling the world. She was quite the hit in London this spring.

For a little fishing village… Seattle has so many amazing performers and I am delighted to have the opportunity to provide a whole new crop of talented Northwest acts the pleasure of being on The Triple Door stage.

Please come out to support the reasons I get out of bed in the morning, El Vez as John Sex with Miss Indigo Blue, Kathleen Hunt and Triadic Breast, Dina Martina, Armitage Shanks reads Steven Jesse Bernstein, Lily Verlaine, Ernie Von Schmaltz, The Naked Folk Singer, Waxie Moon, Queen Shmooquan, Iva Handful with Ultra and Nanda!
