The Gypsy Rose Lee Centennial Celebration just got a little more exciting as Dixie Evans herself will be attending our event in honor of Seattle born Legend of Burlesque  Gypsy Rose Lee,  which is also a fundraiser for The Burlesque Hall of Fame.

For those of you not in the know, Dixie Evans is the Marilyn Monroe of Burlesque who built her career as The Stripping Marilyn. Dixie has been carrying the torch of The Exotic World Museum founded by the deceased Jenny Lee and Jenny’s late husband Charlie. Dixie and The Museum left the decaying goat ranch in Helendale, CA back in 2006 and has been trying to find a permanent home for the Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada since then.

Many of us in the Burlesque community call Dixie Grandma and I am delighted that our Burly Grandma will finally be visiting us, as I have tried for years to have her come to our little fishing village which she performed in back in her heyday! Who knows maybe she even performed at The Embassy Theater ( now The Triple Door) back in the day? Or what memories will be sparked when she comes to visit? I am sure one gentleman will be thrilled to meet her in person, that would be Joe Elder,  please read his sweet  story  HERE

But more on this all soon! I have to clean house for the Holidays and then head out into the night for Santarchy and Mezzo Lunatico !

Autumn is here in all it’s Orange! Yellow! And Red Beauty!                                                                                                                                                                                  The curtain of multilayered grey and rain is falling upon us as we quickly move towards that season where families gather and feasts are made. I don’t know about the rest of you, but the holidays have always been a source of stress and anxiety for me, so I love to focus on something else… and what could be a better diversion than putting ones love and effort into the supportive and caring organization Treehouse, who do so much for children in the greater Seattle area who live in Foster Care.

This is the second year that I have encouraged my peers in the performing and music community to join me in doing what we can to reach out to the young creative souls in our region. We may not be able to foster these young people on a daily basis with roofs over their heads or with food in their mouths, but I am delighted we can foster their creative beings with the humble and mostly anonymous gift of a semester or dance music class.

It feels very personal or is it intimate, to reach out and support or inspire creativity in a young human who may very well feel alone or isolated in a world where so much is unknown. Fostering a creative skill could provide a young person with a foundation within this young human that exists nowhere else, and be a comfort, as we could never understand. So the long and short of it is please come out and support our fundraiser at The Triple Door next week in what ever way you can.

I am currently working on facilitating a gifting program of instruments or the donation of teaching skills to the Little Wishes Program that directly addresses the creativity of these young people in our community who live in Foster Care. If this is of interest to you please write me via paula@swedishhousewife.com so I can help direct your contribution of equipment or your very valuable time to the correct channels. Please research Treehouse as there are many opportunities to support this wonderful organization.

I want to thank in advance my fellow participants in this years event, Kurt Bloch, Jim and Johnny Sangster, Carmella, Drew Church, The Basements, The Shanghai Pearl, Annabella Kirby and Lushy, Maggie Savarino, Kaleb Hagen-Kerr and The Witness, Martha Enson, Belle Cozette, Ernie Von Schmaltz, Iva Handfull, Barbra Ireland, Mark Pickerel, Heather Mayhew, Lydia McLane, Liz Cortez, Wiggy Stardust, Gil Bar-Sela, Bertie! and of course The Triple Door!!!

October 12th – Joey Arias and Eliot Douglass in “Strange Fruit”

Tuesday October 12, 7:30 PM The Triple Door

For those of you who are uninitiated to the magic that Joey Arias conjures up when he takes the stage to sing the songs of Billie Holiday you are in for a treat and will be delighted by this sublime 90 minute sojourn of song and banter.  A dear friends mother (now in her 80’s) came to see the show last year sums it up best “ I never thought I would live to see Billie Holiday perform live!” or Christopher Frizelle of The Stranger “It will blow your fucking head open! ”, mind bending indeed. October 16th – Arias With A Twist : The Docufantasy

Saturday, October 16, 5:00PM , The Egyptian Theatre

Bobby Sheehan; 2010; US; 88 min.

When legendary performance artist Joey Arias and internationally renowned puppeteer Basil Twist collaborated to make the avant-garde show “Arias with a Twist,” the result was a trip into the dreamworld imaginations of two extraordinary artists. In between jaw-droppingly beautiful scenes from the show’s world tour, this Docufantasy explores the lives and art of both Arias and Twist. Along the way, we met their friends and collaborators, including Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Klaus Nomi, Jim Henson, Keith Haring, Grace Jones, Elvira, Pee-wee Herman, Paula the Swedish Housewife, and many others. Be prepared for a groundbreaking, magical, and surreal experience! Read more about this event HERE

Photo of The Week

Robyn Hitchcock

I know this photo is dark but then the subject matter is a little dark at times too. I took this photo last year at The Crocodile Cafe, I was mesmerized by Mister Hitchcock’s hands, they seems like creatures to me creeping up and down the Neck of his Bright Blue and White Telecaster skimming over the Frets like a rubbery starfish or spider, while spinning great tales with his beautiful voice. His hands were defying time and space as though they were from another dimension. I’m very excited to see him next week at The Triple Door collaborating with Joe Boyd another great storyteller. More info on that show HERE

I am desperately trying to get my photo galleries set up and it is a NIGHTMARE!!!!!! I have hundreds if not thousands of beautiful images taken by Christopher Nelson and Michael Doucette to share with you from my last three seasons at The Triple Door and beyond. I have been at my computer for 3 hours and feel there is very little to show for it, other than bad kerning and funky galleries that are improperly linking. Thank you “some holy being” that my skills at production are far better than negotiating HTML and WordPress! My dear sweet Webmistress will have to connect the dots and hopefully make beautiful sense out of the full plate HTML spaghetti I just threw into the ethers! Hang in there and you will see more of this…..

Check out this fun FREE event on Tuesdays at The Triple Door!

Lushy will be playing in the Musicquarium at the Triple Door starting March 30 and then every Tuesday in April as part of SIFF’s Speakeasy film series San Francisco.  NO COVER!

Remy, SIFF and the Triple Door are pleased to announce the second edition of our Speakeasy series that will run each Tuesday from 3/30 to 4/27, this time celebrating the lovely city of San Francisco.

SIFF has chosen two more outstanding films: Ray Harryhausen’s vintage Sci-Fi classic It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955) and the Bogart/Bacall noir thriller Dark Passage (1947).

This time around, local 10 piece ‘progressive cocktail pop’ outfit Lushy will provide the musical accompaniment, laying their horn & percussion driven compositions over the dynamic visuals of both films.

Our resident mixologist Brian McKay has updated the vintage cocktail list for this series with some outstanding new additions, as well as retaining the favorites from the Chicago edition.

In addition, Seattle’s purveyor of all things classy, Paula the Swedish Housewife, will be curating some additional atmospheric nods to everyone’s favorite city by the bay: Tippy Hedron in the flesh, sashaying flower girls and other delightful eye candy shall abound.

Please join us for the exclusive launch of Speakeasy SF on Tuesday 3/30. Films show at 8 and 10PM: ‘It came from beneath the sea’ at 8 and ‘Dark Passage’ at 10.

The First Annual “Seafarer Follies!”

The Swedish Housewife Presents the first annual Seafarer Follies! An aquatic cabaret to make Flo Ziegfeld fall off his boat. Just like in the olden days when “The Aqua Follies” rocked Greenlake, the Seafarer Follies! is the perfect Seafair antidote to loud boats, loud planes and suburban parades.

For our first commemorative year, performance artist Bradford Scobie (NYC) will be at the helm. With acts by Moisture Festival favorites: Trixie Little and The Evil Hate “Sea”-Monkey (Baltimore) and debuting Bambi The Mermaid (Coney Island), Seattle all stars Waxie Moon as King Neptune, The Shanghai Pearl, The Swedish Housewife, and introducing Thee Bearded Clam Chorus!!! Of course, a Real Live Band will be rockin’ the boat!

Come dressed to the nine fathoms in your most outrageous nautical, aquatic, flyboy, flygirl, sailor, sea captain, mermaid, merman, or “you make it up” costume to win prizes and the prestigious year long title of  The Royal Sea Urchin!

That’s right, more flotsam and jetsam than you can shake a stick at… more crustaceans than you can put in a pot! You can’t throw a catfish on this stage and not hit a mermaid! Packed full of Sardines and Sailors!!! Blue Angels, Red Devils, and not your average Chicken of the Sea!

Guaranteed to be Off The Hook!

John Kelly by Austin Young

June 19- John Kelly in “Paved Paradise:Redux”  – The Songs of Joni Mitchell

“I felt like I was Huck Finn attending his own funeral or Jimmy Stewart in that movie where the angel walks him back through his life. I was braced for a lampooning, and I didn’t expect to be so touched” -Joni Mitchell

John brought down the house at The Triple Door in 2008 and we expect no less from him this year! Ever since he appeared as Joni Mitchell at the very first Wigstock in the Fabulous 80′s, John Kelly has cast a spell of illusion that has continued to captivate audiences, including the subject matter herself, Joni Mitchell the poet, painter and singer.  In this loving homage John Kelly the award winning and extremely gifted performance artist inhabits the persona of Joni in a very intimate 90-minute journey through song and reflections on life.

The extraordinary Obie Award-winning actor and performance artist John Kelly is currently touring a new version of his highly acclaimed theatrical homage to the music of the legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell. Paved Paradise has thrilled critics and audiences across the nation and now comes to Seattle for one night to the Triple Door.

The shows concept is daringly simple: Joni in concert, with Kelly on vocals, guitar and dulcimer, backed by piano and bass. The “score” is an array of songs from various stages of Mitchell’s career; the “book” is her actual words, culled from interviews and pirated concert recordings. Kelly’s musicianship satisfies even the most fanatic Joni-phile. The original arrangements, both acoustic and electric, are utterly intact, and Kelly’s spot-on, original-key recreation of her vocals is uncanny. This is no ordinary drag show. No less a critic that Joni Mitchell herself has been surprised by the impact of Kelly’s tribute. “I was braced for a lampooning,” she told The New York Times. “I didn’t expect to be so touched. I cried in two places.” She has become one of Kelly’s biggest fans.

The New York Times review of Kelly’s show exclaimed, “There’s drag, and then there’s transformation through spiritual osmosis, and that’s what John Kelly accomplishes with this tribute to the queen of the singer-song writers. . . Magnificent.”” And The Boston Globe raved, “Paved Paradise is either the gentlest sendup or the sharpest homage you’ll ever see. … Kelly doesn’t so much impersonate Mitchell as channel her.  There’s really only one word for the way Kelly plays with a famous, complicated persona and with our own ideas of the person behind that mask. It’s genius.”

Performance and visual artist John Kelly originally trained as a dancer with American Ballet Theatre and Harkness House for Ballet Arts. Wanting to extend his range as a performer, he also studied corporeal mime, trapeze and tight-wire technique and voice. As a visual artist he studied at Parsons School of Design and at the School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Kelly’s artistic endeavors extend to writing and directing along with his work in the visual arts, singing and acting. In 2001, he collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici as lyricist and director. He has recorded with Laurie Anderson and performed with the Blue Man Group, among countless others.
A two-time Obie Award winner for his acting, his long list of stage credits extend to Orpheus X at the American Repertory Theatre and James Joyce’s The Dead on Broadway. He has created more than 30 performance works, including Paved Paradise:The Art of Joni Mitchell.
