I can’t believe this really happened sometimes but this story is true. When I was 12 almost 13 in the summer of 1965, I had the pure young boy pleasure to share 10 minutes with Miss Dixie Evans on a city bus in Seattle. I first saw her at the bus stop. My eyes locked on to her, I made sure to get on the bus right behind her, and then I sat right across from her in the two facing seats at the back of the bus. I spoke right up telling her how beautiful she looked as she was on her way to the theater on 3rd Ave. to do a show that evening. She was very kind to me, I’m sure she could see this very young teenage boy was in ahhhh of her Marilyn Monroe like beautiful appearance. We talked about her and the show she was on her way to do for that short bus ride. When she went to pull the cord to ring the bell to stop the bus she couldn’t reach, she had a few bags with her so I jumped up and pulled the cord for her. She got up to get off the bus I was standing in her way she then gave me a hug and the best big kiss on the cheek I’ve ever had. I wore the red lip stick home. When the bus got to her stop across from the theater I was still in heaven. As the bus slowly pulled away I watched her as she walked across the street to go in the theater. When I got home, I ran in the house found the Seattle Times paper to find her picture in the ad of the shows listed with the other burlesque shows and movies. I then had the nerve to call the theater and ask for her, the voice said “just a minute” I remember hearing the back stage sounds over the phone while I waited. She came to the phone and I told her who I was. She told me how sweet it was for me to call her, and then we said our goodbyes. I’ve been hooked on burlesque ever since that Saturday evening. I had a brief meeting with the Swedish Housewife last night at a burlesque show at the Triple Door Theater in downtown Seattle. I shared my story with her; she asked me what the woman looked liked. I did my best to tell her what this beautiful woman looked like to me even after all these years. She then told me that I was talking about Miss Dixie Evans the Marilyn Monroe of the burlesque world. So after I got home last night, I got on the computer and Google to see for myself. After spending time last night and then many hours today I now know who that vision was. It was indeed Miss Dixie Evans. Now I’m going to plan a road trip the Exotic World Burlesque Museum, I hope to meet her again. Maybe I’ll see you there. I’ll be the man in ahhhh…………..Joe Elder Bremerton WA.
