October 12th – Joey Arias and Eliot Douglass in “Strange Fruit”

Tuesday October 12, 7:30 PM The Triple Door

For those of you who are uninitiated to the magic that Joey Arias conjures up when he takes the stage to sing the songs of Billie Holiday you are in for a treat and will be delighted by this sublime 90 minute sojourn of song and banter.  A dear friends mother (now in her 80’s) came to see the show last year sums it up best “ I never thought I would live to see Billie Holiday perform live!” or Christopher Frizelle of The Stranger “It will blow your fucking head open! ”, mind bending indeed. October 16th – Arias With A Twist : The Docufantasy

Saturday, October 16, 5:00PM , The Egyptian Theatre

Bobby Sheehan; 2010; US; 88 min.

When legendary performance artist Joey Arias and internationally renowned puppeteer Basil Twist collaborated to make the avant-garde show “Arias with a Twist,” the result was a trip into the dreamworld imaginations of two extraordinary artists. In between jaw-droppingly beautiful scenes from the show’s world tour, this Docufantasy explores the lives and art of both Arias and Twist. Along the way, we met their friends and collaborators, including Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Klaus Nomi, Jim Henson, Keith Haring, Grace Jones, Elvira, Pee-wee Herman, Paula the Swedish Housewife, and many others. Be prepared for a groundbreaking, magical, and surreal experience! Read more about this event HERE

Robyn Hitchcock

I know this photo is dark but then the subject matter is a little dark at times too. I took this photo last year at The Crocodile Cafe, I was mesmerized by Mister Hitchcock’s hands, they seems like creatures to me creeping up and down the Neck of his Bright Blue and White Telecaster skimming over the Frets like a rubbery starfish or spider, while spinning great tales with his beautiful voice. His hands were defying time and space as though they were from another dimension. I’m very excited to see him next week at The Triple Door collaborating with Joe Boyd another great storyteller. More info on that show HERE

If you haven’t heard about Lucia Near and her brilliant productions you have truly been missing out. Last week Gasworks Park was treated to an 1800′s Pageant of Epic proportions! I have been following her productions for over a year now and every time I attend one of her spectacles I feel as though I have been given a beautiful decadent gift of Surreal Whimsy! Thank you Lucia!

Making Lemon Aid out of the lemon that my camera was stolen. This photo was taken with my IPhone using the Hipstamatic App. It is better than nothing but I do miss my Canon G10! This image reminds me of the Dagurerrotypes I did while studying at The International Center on Photography about a million years ago.

I find it very exciting that Burlesque is bouncing off the stage and onto the silver screen as well as hitting the printing press!

Historically this is not new news, as Gypsy Rose Lee’s book “The G String Murders” was adapted to the screen in “Lady of Burlesque” starring Barbara Stanwyck and was nominated for an Oscar back in 1944. But currently there are several documentaries being made about the History of Burlesque as a well as the modern continuation of the art form.

What I am enjoying about all these films and books is that each one has a voice unique to the performer or the region where they come from. Burlesque is more diverse today than it has ever been and the beauty of that is there is something for every one to enjoy.

There is no right way it should be done. That is an opinion (and believe me I have opinions, but that is another blog…) Art is Art, it is beyond opinion. You can take it or leave it, what matters is that you find the Art that appeals to you and that you support it!

But I digress; all these documentaries that are coming out collectively create a wonderful overview of the International Burlesque Explosion! I hope for more documentaries on the historical aspect of Burlesque, as so many of the Ladies and Gentlemen who have been a part of the legacy of Burlesque are still alive and we have a golden opportunity to hear their stories before they move on to the great stage in the sky.

Not all the films coming out are documentaries, some Feature Films feature the Stars of our community, like … Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, Immodesty Blaize, Waxie Moon, Scotty The Blue Bunny, Miss Indigo Blue, Lily Verlaine and so on… while others have Film Industry Stars Burlesquing us… ; )

Dueling Lemons

I am not sure who is going to be more worn out by this act, Miss Indigo Blue, Leroi the Girl Boi or YOU the audience?

The Lemon Act is the most High-energy act in “House of Thee UnHoly”  and these ladies will squeeze very ounce of energy out of themselves, their lemons, each other and you before their act is through.

Both these lovelies came to the show with their own versions of “The Lemon Song” that they had been performing as solos. I invited them to combine their acts for “House of Thee UnHoly #2″ and they have been performing it ever since when possible (they live on different coasts). Indigo created her’s for Ellen Forney‘s book release “I Heart Led Zepplein”, Leroi created hers to compete at The Burlesque Hall of Fame.

Together they bring a new twist to their individual acts and have created a Feral Off The Hook 6 minute and 20 second act that will leave you wet!  Don’t be a sour puss come see this “Dueling Lemon Act” at  The Triple Door September 23-25 ! Buy Tickets !

These photos of Miss Indigo Blue and Leroi The Girl Boi were taken by Michael Doucette in 2008

I am desperately trying to get my photo galleries set up and it is a NIGHTMARE!!!!!! I have hundreds if not thousands of beautiful images taken by Christopher Nelson and Michael Doucette to share with you from my last three seasons at The Triple Door and beyond. I have been at my computer for 3 hours and feel there is very little to show for it, other than bad kerning and funky galleries that are improperly linking. Thank you “some holy being” that my skills at production are far better than negotiating HTML and WordPress! My dear sweet Webmistress will have to connect the dots and hopefully make beautiful sense out of the full plate HTML spaghetti I just threw into the ethers! Hang in there and you will see more of this…..

Photo of The Week X3

The Stunning and Beautiful Dirty Martini

Sheesh …. When was this photo taken? I know it was in a Club off the beat and track in Brooklyn. Must have been far, as I took a car service there and it was very late. It has to be after 2001, as I was visiting NYC after having moved back to Seattle. What I do remember….  is Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz and Lady Ace tearing it up on a stage made of a pool table and some rickety ass stairs that got them on and off the damn thing! These images remind me of a photo I’ve seen of Marinka, I’ll have to ask her for it and see if I can share it with you.

I am realizing I feel paralyzed without a camera (damn the ass who stole my Vivienne Westwood handbag two weeks ago), I will just have to bite the bullet and buy another one so I can keep documenting my life as well as others! Hope you enjoy this blast from the past!

September 11, 2010

I was living in Fort Greene Brooklyn on September 11, 2001, I hardly ever talk about that day and for an opinionated and outspoken person like myself that is saying a lot.

What I want to share about that day nine years ago, is that it’s magnitude and horror just became surreal to me and affirmed that deep down I am a pacifist. I would never wish upon anyone else what I saw or felt that day or the trying days that followed. Through that event I understood just a portion of what others have been victim too and I was humbled.

I turned off my TV that morning as the spin doctors began to weave the web we are entangled in now. Nine years later the ripple effects of this man made disaster has created a Tsunami of Hate and Fear.

That day I chose not to watch in person what I knew only had one possible out come. Instead I went home and sat in silence and begged the universe to let it end here and now. No more Hate, No more War. These are flames I will not feed. Put Love out to this world today and carry hope in your heart. It’s a great day to remember all the beauty this life brings!

I was moved by this story in the New York Times today “Muslims and Islam Were Part of Twin Towers’ Life”. It seems many Americans have lost site that American Muslims suffered loss that day too, we all need to heal!

PONY

Marcus Wilson is a brilliant man! His creation Pony is the best modern fag bar to open it’s doors in Seattle … Ever!  Yes, Re Bar had is glory days,  but nothing new has come along since then in the neighborhood fag bar department. The visual concept is stunning, sexy, dramatic, the bartenders have a sense of fun and humor. It’s retro sexy images of men from the 70′s era off the pages of  Mandate and Honcho harken back to a time when natural bodies and natural hair were King! I love the realness of these manly men.  Some of the Old School Bars are quite frankly conservative . Yes !!! Even homosexuals can be conservative, and have a hard time thinking outside the box they have placed themselves in or by social construct. Pony is refreshing and modern while tipping it’s cowboy hat to the past. Pony has been open for awhile, so this is not new news how fab the bar is. But I was looking for a photo of the week from my back log of images, as I have not yet replaced the camera that was stolen from me last week, and this one popped out at me. I’m bummed out that customers kept breaking the strobe light in the bathrooms that were syncopated to make a pee stream appears in droplets . Very David Lynch if you ask me.  Marcus told me awhile back that someone had complained about the strobe lights and that they could cause a seizure in a patron…..
