This is my new friend August playing with her band “Only Girls Allowed” at the “Girls Rock ! Seattle” Summer Camp 2010 Showcase at Neumos. It was overwhelming to be in there, the room was packed with Young Girls ages 8 –16 and their fans of all ages (mostly female). It struck me as I stood there, that when I was August’s age (9), I was not encouraged to pursue this style of music, nor the instruments that come along with it. In 1969 I wanted to play the Drums and was told girls don’t play drums, that it was un lady like, the response was no better when I suggested the Electric Guitar. I was lucky enough to get a guitar and a songbook but that was as far as that encouraged went and I lost interest being in an isolated creative void, I never got past playing “Yellow Bird” and “ Mellow Yellow”. So needles to say I was moved to the core today to see so many young ladies being supported and so lovingly encouraged in their musical pursuits. I can’t wait to see what this generation of young rockers will bring us in the future…

Bambi The Mermaid is not your average Chicken of The Sea, and she has the most astounding costumes related to the Sea to prove it. I could have booked an entire show just with her, but you will only get to see two of her delightful Sea Crustaceans at The Seafarer Follies this year… too bad we don’t have a tank on the stage. This stunning photo by Andrew Brusso is a little preview (though she’s not wearing so much of her costume any more in it) of what you can expect August 6th and 7th at The Triple Door. This photo was taken at the former home of Dixie Evans in Helebdale CA, known to us Burlesque geeks as “Exotic World” where we used to trundle out to before the Burlesque Hall of Fame Museum, Pageant and Dixie were moved to Las Vegas in 2005.
That bumpin and grinding primate is headed to Seattle to perform at The First Annual Seafarer Follies this August the 6th and 7th. He’ll be hanging from the rafters, singing a song and frolicking with his Sexy and Sassy counter part Trixie Little.
This last June he won the category of “Best Boylesque” at The Burlesque Hall of Fame Striptease Reunion 2010, and I wanted to share these amazing photographs he sent me that Mike Lee took of him.

A Summer Night finally arrives to Seattle! Bastille Day July 14, 2010 catching a ride home in Chris Ford’s 1966 Polara with Lou Henry Hoover and Deirdre Timmons from The Triple Door after seeing the smoldering Lily Verlaine’s Francophilic production Nightcap : L’Edition Francaise . The show and the car ride were très magnifique!
I am wearing a Black Ribbon around my neck as I must confess I am a bit of a Royalist and supporter of the now long deceased Marie Antoinette. She was a bit of a scape goat and perhaps one day I will share my thought on this subject in great detail. But for now I’ll just say that misogyny has a long and bloody History!

And it may surprise you to learn that I’m not talking clothes….but records! They are a perfect shape, pleasing to hold, the ideal dimensions for creating artwork, but what I love the most about Records? Is the warm sound that emanates from them. Since the age of 16 I’ve had DJ friends and prior to that was an avid record buyer. Yes! I belonged to a bunch of record clubs but Capitol Records is the one that stands out. I coveted records! My mothers Santana and Herb Alpert Records when I was 9 and when my parents divorced when I was 12, I tried hiding my fathers Tom Lehrer records from him as I hated to see them go (after he died three years ago I was quite happy to get them back.) Maybe it’s my love for records that I’ve had so many DJ friends and dated so many DJ’s. I also love to dance and historically the dance floor is where I have met some of my best friends and favorite people in the world. I spent a majority of my youth attending dance classes and then clubs as soon as I could pass the age limit to get in.
It’s really exciting that so many of my DJ friends are going back to spinning Vinyl and that shops like Wall of Sound exisit. I love walking up Pine Street and looking in their window to see the latest display of record covers. Often the album covers trigger off a bunch of memories and I get lost in my head remembering. As I get older I realize there is so much I have filed deep into these cabinets in my brain that it is so welcome to have these memories jostled loose and come back in full color, photographs can do that too, but music usually adds a whole sensory aspect to these remembrances that go beyond the visual.
I was very excited last week when I learned of Scott Giampino’s new night “Kings Of The Vinyl Frontier” and look forward to their next event. BTW Soul Hole is having a big blow out in Georgetown Summer “Soul Hole on July 30th not sure of the venue.
